Marko: Ricciardo took a strange decision

The number one of the Austrian team fails to explain why the Australian driver changed his mind at the last minute.

A few hours away from the officialization of the passage, in 2019, by Daniel Ricciardo from Red Bull to Renault, Helmut Marko says his opinion. The Austrian team’s number one spoke of his astonishment at the decision made by our Australian rider.

I can not understand why he changed. It was a very strange story – Marko said- the negotiations were difficult but they were moving forward. On the Wednesday before the Austrian GP, we sat and talked for two hours and agreed to make another meeting to close the deal. During the weekend there were some improvements for him. In Hungary, he said both to me and to Mr. Mateschitz that everything was fine and that the following Tuesday, during the tests he would sign… Guess what ? He did not. I got a call on Thursday afternoon. It was so obvious from his voice… I told him, come to the point! We’re adults there is no problem. Then he added: I go to Renault

The motivations that would have prompted Ricciardo to the French side could be two according to Marko:

Perhaps he does not believe in our project with Honda, or the French team offered him a lot of money

Pierre Gasly will take the place of Daniel Ricciardo at the side of Max Verstappen driving the Red Bull next year. This year’s good performance at the wheel of the motored Red Bull Honda convinced the leaders of the Austrian team to aim for the young Frenchman. Helmut Marko and Christian Horner were impressed by his results in Bahrain, Munich and Budapest.

It is the team principal of Red Bull Christian Horner to ideally welcome the new team:

Since its debut in F1, Gasly has put on display an undoubted talent that has grown within our youth program, this season until now he has me Impressed proposing itself as one of the best young driver present in the grid. The 2018 is still long and we will work hard to take away further satisfaction, but the look is already addressed to 2019 where we will get to know thoroughly and to discover the potential of Gasly driving the wheel of Red Bull
