Pirelli: Here we have pressure and camber for Suzuka

Some advantages and disadvantages related with tyres used on a race car, it is the fact tyres producer is going to be easily attacked everytime there is a problem instead of you. even when some factors are not under its control but checked only by the Formula 1 team. Hence after what happened in Spa and some consequences exploded in Monza, Pirelli was called-out to provide some values to be used on their tyres during next races. Those parameters were expressily requested by FIA to describe clearly to any team how a tyres shall be safely used.

Suzuka is close and Pirelli gave some data to be followed by all teams, even if this is now an imposition given by FIA, because those data are a reference they use them during their checks. Minimum pressure to inflate front tyre must be 21,5 psi and 20,5 psi in the rear tyre (this is equal to 1,41 and 1,48 bar). Camber must be negative and with a maximum value of 3,25 degrees on the front and 2,25 degrees on the rear.

Camber is an indicator of how tyres are tilted laterally. If they are toward inside (if the top of right and left tyreas are closer than bottom side) in this case we talk about a negative camber. When this negative camber is increased, normally this is improving stability. Side effect is that situation is going to augument load and wear out of the tread because it is working much more than normal.

Recently, a video published by the brand of big P explained all the procedures followed to create and manufacture a tyre used in Formula 1. Each time, around 1700 tyres are moved to each circuit. They are made in a factory based at Izmit in Turkey and marked with a special bar code given deliberately by FIA. This is placed on the chassis of every tyre, is such a way that is impossible to take it away and it is a kind of identity card. A special software called RTS (Racing Tyre System) will take care to read each information contained inside each type used in a single week-end and to check the origin and time it was made. A list of those tyres created is then sent by Pirelli’s factory to Didcat in U.K. where Pirelli based his main Formula 1 office department so that front tyres and rear tyres are matched up. This list is finally given to FIA to be checked anytime they want. 

After that,  allocation of a certain set of tyres to a team instead of another is at random. What is doing this difficult job is a computer picking up randomly a team and a set of tyres to match them together. Showing the way everything is done, Pirelli loves to clear away any suspect, supposition or surmise and to specify few points with a note:

Pirelli is clearly not involved in the process of allocation of a tyre. We can not influence in no way the allocation of this or that tyre to one pilot or another

Any team is followed by a Pirelli engineer with a specific task to follow them along the season, but they do not have access to any data and strategy of competitors. It is necessary to go up until the main center based in Milan where a department of research and development is based to have a full picture about performance of the tyres. Those data are used to develop better tyres in the next season and are not shared with anybody inside the Pirelli brand. 

Paul Hembery, main director of Pirelli would like to express his opinion about how the system is checked and managed:

All the work to allocate the tyres to every single team and pilots, it is fully controlled and managed by FIA with the help of a computer. This is going on from time when each tyre leaves the factory until time they arrive to a circuit. It is done to guarantuee the maximum impartiatility to all teams and this is actually our main priority too.Each and anyone of our engineers are working with just a single team in Formula 1. They use the maximum fairness and discretion. This is a fundamental concept we like to stress out to anybody

Some people are talking about the fact many troubles experienced by Pirelli in some races last years, it was due to some teams using some kind of fake pressure gauges. In reality any pressure indicated was not the real value inside the tyre and this forced Pirelli and FIA to introduce some controls to really be sure their indication are really followed. We will see if those controls will improve the show and safety of this competition.
