Williams runs to Melbourne like a test session. Russell tells it will not improve in Bahrain and China, Kubica forced to compete without a mirror from the third lap
At the Albert Park just to be present, with kerbs not to be attacked, a few spare parts available and a last row to which the Williams seems destined for a long time. Difficult to draw a real budget from the seasonal onset, it was rather a three-day test.
The first street after more than 8 years, for Robert Kubica, is stingy with satisfaction. Predictable, this Formula 1 is different. Ends dubbed after 3 laps, with a FW42 immediately damaged in turn 1.
Even so, Robert Kubica talks about his race in this way:
Race more fun than it appeared from the outside, although I never thought to say something like that, because usually the performance in the race is the most important aspect.
But I believe that in the situation where I was, back after 8 and a half years, although it was not great the step there were positive point to focus about…
Without anybody, I was told that the pace was good for the conditions in which I was. Almost I started to laugh, because from the cockpit the sensations were really negative.Robert Kubica Australian GP
The rhythm in the race is the last thing on which to concentrate, when it is the same behavior of the car to be, still, an absolute unknown, as evidenced by the error made in qualifying by Kubica, surprised (in positive) by the reaction of Williams with an evolution of the track.
It raced an even more uphill race than that faced by George Russell, because of the accident in Curve 1, departing:
In qualifying It was not the best day…
During the race I made a good start. Unfortunately, in Curve 1, I think it was Gasly that, touched by another machine, moved suddenly to the right and damaged my front wing.
I also had damage to my rear-wing, I lost the mirror after three laps: that’s how it goes now, from our difficulties we can improve, hopefully it will be better in the course of the seasonGeorge Russel Australian GP
It will certainly not improve in Bahrain and China, a reality also known by George Russell, to give the measure of what, the Williams, at this stage is more than ever participant for “Olympic spirit”, where it would count instead anything:
I am glad I brought the car home without drama. Personally I am well from a physical point of view, but it is obvious how disappointing it is to be so far from the others.
We have made an additional pit-stop to try all three compounds of tires, unfortunately this is the scenario in which we are currently.

We will have a lot of work to do tomorrow to improve. I do not care about fighting with Robert for the last place, we have to work together to make the car work properly
